Semantic relations are the ways that words are connected to other words. There are many different types of semantic relations, some of which are explained here:
- Hypernymy: a hypernym is “a word whose meaning includes a group of other words”
- Hyponymy: a hyponym is “a word whose meaning is included in the meaning of another word”
- Meronymy: a meronym is a word that “denotes a constituent part or a member of something”
- Holonymy: a holonym is “the name of the whole of which the meronym is a part”
- Synonymy: a synonym is “a word or phrase that has the same or nearly the same meaning as another word or phrase in the same language”
- Antonymy: an antonym is “a word that means the opposite of another word”
- Pertainymy: a pertainym is a word which can be said to “belong to” or “come from” another word
We can see example of each of these relations below:
We can investigate the semantic relations between words using a wordnet, which we will explore in the next post.
